Chinese village leader's death, an accident or a... →
Yet another story about the injustices of the Chinese government has splattered across the internet. And yet again, it is concerning how the Chinese government has dealt with those citizens who try to profess their opinions, opinions that differ from theirs. This is the story of Qian Yunhui, leader of a village in eastern China. In 2004, corrupt officials had gone into the village and had...

Dilemmas with Humor: Asians Sleeping in the...
After some friends started posting Asians Sleeping in the Library (ASL) all over Facebook, I began to think about the question my colleague raised: do you feel violated as an Asian American reading this blog? Angry Asian Man has shared his thoughts, now here are my two cents. I’ve gone through quite a number of the pictures and I find it funny how creative people get in their sleeping positions....

O Tannenbaum
It has recently been reported that South Korea is allowing a local church to light up their approximately 100-foot tower into a Christmas tree. Holiday spirit withstanding, this tower-turned-Christmas-tree is situated on a controversial spot: the border between North and South Korea. The plan? To engage in “psychological warfare.” North Korea, which currently suffers from energy...

Just a passing DREAM?
The DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act narrowly passed in the House Wednesday evening by 216-198. Early Thursday morning, Democrats decided to postpone voting on the Act in the Senate, so for now the debates have settled down. Speaking the unspoken: "Take Out" film delivers to...
“Takeout,” a feature film by Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou, was shown at MoCA’s Chinese Cinema Club, with a special talk-back discussion for the audience to speak with the film’s directors. The film unfolds multiple layers of local and macro-level realities, normally sidelined and not a part of the larger American immigrant narrative.  Ming, the main character, is struggling to pay off his...

How much difference is there between matchmaking...
Recently, Taiwanese actress Shu Qi told the media, “I’m afraid to go home.” What is the cause of this fear? It is because Shu Qi’s parents has deemed it time for their 34 year old daughter to get married and have therefore bombarded her with men they want her to go on a blind date with. They probably didn’t have much trouble finding men for her, but Shu Qi believes...

Yellow on White
Does anyone find Modern Family racist? There’s a particular scene in a recent episode where the gay couple, who has an adopted Asian baby girl, tries to use their minority status as an advantage in order to get into a prestigious preschool (yes, preschool - but that’s an entirely different matter). In the end, they are trumped by another gay couple with another minority baby except one...

What are some subtexts that are not addressed? Note: Long article and spoilers below.   The Beginning at...
