With new legislation slated to ban shark fin sales in New York, many changes will be made to menus at Chinese restaurants throughout the sate. The unethical practice of reaping shark fins by cutting them off and leaving the rest of the shark to die has caught the attention of state Assemblymen who sponsored the bill that will be enacted in 2013. But what does this mean for the future of Chinese cuisine? Restaurants will be forced to use shark fin substitutes in their shark fin soup, a traditional delicacy thought to bring good luck and added health benefits. Although the passing of this bill is done in good faith and out of being responsible citizens, there might be backlash from the Chinese community, whose food that was once cherished and valued so highly is slowly being removed from its culture.
